"Thank you, Sandy. I'm standing outside the design studio of one of the demonic world's foremost fashion designers, Dr. Ten. Minutes ago, she gave me a glimpse of her spring 2007 line for fox demons. And what will the best-dressed fox demons be wearing next year?

Cat boy boas.

No fox demon worthy of his tails will want to be seen without a cat boy boa draped casually over his shoulder. And if that cat boy sports a sexy sulk, so much the better.

I wanted to take a break from coloring Weisa's feathers. So I switched to this. Since this was a "take a break from my artistic endeavors" artistic endeavor, I didn't spend as much time sweating the details as I probably should have. Nevertheless, I think it turned out fairly well. Many thanks are due to Dr. Ten and to blackthornblack for posting the Mimibon raw scans.

From Ookami: I JUST finished cleaning the SFX from Passage, Vol. 3, Ch4., and this is the title page. It was so pretty I just couldn't resist painting it. (Is my Shinohara obsession showing again?)

In case anyone would like to know...

Once I cleaned the title text from Shino's tummy I realized that Shino was missing something vitally important -- a belly button. And so the great Navel-hunt occured. Honest to god, I searched through all my cleaned scans to find just the right belly-button -- and performed surgical repars using a 100% Authentic Dr. Ten Imported belly-button.

Hopefully Tomoe won't notice that Shino's belly-button looks awfully familiar.

Mamoru Mitsugi - As Uncaring as a Butterfly

Ookami Kasumi colours this beautiful and exotic panel from Passage from Servant Boy vol. 2. Click the smaller image for the full size. She also provides this wonderful little insight into our favourite white-silver haired bishounen:

Here in the West the butterfly is seen as a carefree creature. In the East, the butterfly means something else entirely. The current Dalai Lama explains that in the East, the butterfly is not seen as than carefree, so much as uncaring.

"The butterfly never meets its mother. It must survive independently and remains a stranger to affection. An animal nurtured by mother's milk, however, is dependent on another for its basic survival. A child who grows up in a cold and detached home environment is similar to the butterfly, in that kindness is sparing. Once an adult, it will be very difficult for that person to show compassion."

…Which is exactly how Mamoru’s appears.

Butterflies are also a symbol of Death ? or rather, life after death.

The Butterfly is also the very traditional symbol of the Courtesan.

Courtesans were more than just high-paid escorts, they were highly educated, extremely talented entertainers and professional hostesses. Unlike their call-girl counterparts, courtesans entertained openly among the nobility.

Very often Courtesans were impoverished (dead to society) noblewomen with no choice but to enter the Floating World to survive. (life after death) For a seriously in-depth history of Japanese Courtesans, go HERE.

The Floating World of the courtesan was as rife with poison and intrigue as the imperial court. Assassination was all too common. Bodyguards were absolutely necessary.

In Chapter 1, volume 1 of Passage, Mamoru explains to Tomoe, that he is the hereditary protector of his clan ? a clan ruled by women who were Courtesans. Mamoru's traditional position was bodyguard.

White, the color of Mamoru's hair and the color of his butterfly wings, is the color for death; and then there's Mamoru's spider hiding behind those pretty wings. His entire tattoo is a clear symbol of his function as protector, a warning that he is a deliverer of death to unwary butterflies.

Mamoru is also said to be "Onmyoji".
-- An Onmyoji is more than a mere fortune-teller or a spirit medium, they’re necromancers ? ghost summoners and demon-slayers. The Floating World is said to exists between the planes of existence -- easily accessible to both Gods and Demons.

As the son of the last Clan leader, Shinohara should have inherited Mamoru’s position as family guardian, unfortunately he can’t. His mother died during his birth, which turned his demon summoning powers inside out ? and then later, he became a demon himself.
And Tomoe?
-- Poor Tomoe was never meant to be a bodyguard. His clan served as spies for the bodyguards they worked under.

About that scar...
-- When Mamoru's sister Sana, sliced his back wide open, severing his tattoo, she did more than merely scar him. She released him from his obligation to protect her -- symbolically killing his purpose for existence among the clan that had them both entrapped in a life neither wanted to lead. Like his ancestors, Mamoru found a new life in the Floating World.
