Summary & Overview

Scanner DPI & Software Handling

DPI

• Colour - 400 dpi minimum
• Greyscale - 300 dpi minimum

Output Reason

• For samples - above noted minimums are sufficient
• For scanlation - higher than noted above if desired

Crop or Not

• For samples - crop image in scanning software
• For scanlation with debound manga - crop image in scanning software
• For scanlation with bound manga - scan extra space around the pages for any needed tilting later on

Levelling Black & White

• For samples - black point just shy of mid peak, white point just shy of mid valley
• For scanlation with debound manga - three step levelling proess (1. at scan - left edge of black peak / half way to white valley / -5 mid point, 2. before resizing - half way towards black peak / half way towards white valley / 1.05 mid point, and 3. after resizing - half way past black peak / left edge of white valley / 1.05 mid point)
• For scanlation with bound manga - black point about half way to mid peak, white point about half way to mid valley

Saving

• Save as TIF or PNG
• Use auto sequencer

Scanning Colour

• Scan preview in colour at minimum 400 dpi
• Select region
• Scan final

Scanning Black & White

• Scan preview in greyscale at minimum 300 dpi
• Select region
• Zoom if for scanlation and re-select as necessary
• Level
• Scan final

Preparing Scans

Double Pages

• Open image
• Crop first page
• Save As with "a" at end of file name (TIF or PNG)
• Undo
• Crop second page
• Save As with "b" at end of file name (TIF or PNG)
• Delete double pages

Batch Rename

• Lower case entire name including extension
• Naming convention (i.e. title_vol_ch_#)

Cleaning & Editing Images in Graphics Program

Output Settings

• Black & White - PNG 8, 100% dither, 17 colours, grayscale, no transparency
• Colour - JPG at around 80%

Colour

• Open image
• Crop & Resize to consistent height and width
• Rotate if necessary
• Check curves and adjust if necessary
• Gutter shadow - Stamp, Burn and Dodge tools
• Save as PNG always
• Batch process export with above output setting

Black & White for Samples (via batch process)

• Scale (consistent height or width)
• Rotate (if needed)
• Auto Colour/Level
• Export (with above output settings)

Black & White for Scanlation from Debound Manga

• Open image & Level
• Crop, Resize to consistent height and width & Level
• Rotate if necessary
• Check levels againif desired
• Burn tool and black Brush for "blacks", white Brush for "whites" & Stamp for edges
• Add and remove text
• Save as PNG always
• Batch process export with above output settings

Black & White for Scanlation from Bound Manga

• Open image
• Crop & Resize to consistent height and width
• Rotate if necessary
• Check levels and adjust if necessary
• First pass use white Brush for "whites"
• Second pass use Burn tool and black Brush for "blacks"
• Gutter shadow - level region, Stamp, Burn and Dodge tools
• Add and remove text
• Save as PNG always
• Batch process export with above output settings
